What is Composite?

It is called "composite" to combine two or more materials that are completely different from each other in terms of their structural properties and apply some chemical and physical processes, to obtain a new product/material that has the properties of the combined materials but in a more advanced form than the combined materials in terms of resistance and durability. In other words, it can be said "the situation of obtaining a new product as a result of hybridization of two or more materials".

Composite materials are much more durable, resistant and superior in terms of properties than the original materials combined. These products and materials consist of a combination of reinforcing elements and carrier matrices. An important feature in composite production; that the combining substances do not dissolve and mix with each other. For example, "fibers" provide mechanical strength as reinforcement material for composite production. In addition, matrices indirectly contribute to the formation of the mechanical structure by holding the reinforcement materials together and providing the stress transfer of the reinforcement materials. In addition, matrices are the main structure that allows the composite structure to emerge as a complete system by protecting the reinforcement elements from external factors both physically and chemically.

The most preferred sectors today as the usage areas of the composite; construction and maintenance sectors in shipping and maritime, construction, maintenance, repair and renovation sectors of port and maritime facilities, building-apartment construction, maintenance and repair sectors, road construction, arrangement, maintenance and repair sectors across highways, home appliance production, design and space They are sectors of use in almost every area of life, from the use of technology to the use of technology.

The use of composite materials is preferred because it has superior properties in every field compared to other materials and components. These superior features;

  • Since it is a multi-component material, extreme design requests can be met,
  • Providing weight reduction by 20% – 60%,
  • Generally low fixed and variable costs,
  • Low thermal expansion,
  • Very good fatigue and fracture properties,
  • Its corrosion resistance is very high,
  • Collision and damage tolerance is high,
  • Better resistance in layers than conventional materials,
  • Easy to manufacture and assemble,
  • Forming composites is approximately 5 times cheaper than forming conventional metals.
  • Being light, that is, having a high weight/strength ratio,
  • Easy and fast production,
  • A wide variety of features can be gained with additional additives, properties such as can be given as an example.

Today, the most commonly used composite material combination forms in industrial applications are; glass fiber + polyester, carbon fiber + epoxy and aramid fiber + epoxy combinations.

Composite materials should be used and produced frequently due to their benefits to economy, nature and sustainability.
